The affordable midsize class of vehicles is full of hard-hitting competitors. For drivers in the Bloomfield, Montclair, and Clifton areas, the two most popular vehicles in this class are the 2019 Ford Fusion and the 2019 Subaru Legacy.

How do the two compare? Our team took the time to do a vehicle comparison for you. Check it out, and then schedule a test drive at Lynnes Subaru.

Subaru Legacy vs Ford Fusion Power Comparison

The new Subaru Legacy offers two powerful engine options. The first is a 2.5-liter DOHC four-cylinder SUBARU BOXER® engine with Active Valve Control System. This engine is unique because it lays flat and features horizontally opposed valves. This offers a lower center of gravity and eliminates drag while diverting power from the engine to the vehicle's drivetrain to improve handling. The 2.5-liter engine produces 175 horsepower and 174 lb-ft of torque, and gets an EPA-estimated 25 MPG city and 34 MPG highway.

The second engine option is a 3.6-liter DOHC six-cylinder SUBARU BOXER® engine with Dual Active Valve Control System. This engine produces a ramped up 256 horsepower and 247 lb-ft of torque and gets an EPA-estimated 20 MPG city and 28 MPG highway. Both engines are paired with the Lineartronic® Continuously Variable Transmission with six-speed manual mode and paddle shifters.

The 2019 Ford Fusion offers numerous engine options, including a 2.5L engine. Like the one in the Legacy, it generates 175 horsepower. However, it isn't as efficient. Overall, the 2.5L engine in the Fusion only gets an EPA-estimated 21 MPG city/31 MPG highway.

With all that said, it's clear that the Ford Fusion doesn't compare to the power and maneuverability that you'll get with the 2019 Subaru Legacy. Between the powerful engine and the smooth-transitioning transmission, the Legacy delivers a more impressive driving experience.

Technology Comparison

The 2019 Subaru Legacy offers highly functional infotainment technology. The vehicle comes standard with a 6.5-inch Multimedia Plus touchscreen with SUBARU STARLINK™. You'll have access to Apple CarPlay™, Android Auto™, Pandora®, and Aha™, and smartphone app integration. The available Harman Kardon® premium audio system also gives the Legacy great sound quality.

The SUBARU STARLINK™ system has a built-in, voice-activated navigation system, which is powered by TomTom, too. You'll also have access to hands-free phone connectivity with built-in Bluetooth®. You even have the option of upgrading to an 8-inch Multimedia Plus touchscreen.

The 2019 Ford Fusion features SYNC® 3 voice-activated technology. With SYNC® 3 you'll be able to integrate your smartphone, so you can make calls and send or receive texts using voice commands. It will also give you access to Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™. Unfortunately, unlike the Legacy, the Fusion doesn't come standard with this innovative smartphone integration software.

Safety Features

The 2019 Subaru Legacy offers some impressive safety features. To start, the Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive provides superior handling in any road condition. The Legacy also features EyeSight®, which offers a wide range of driver-assistive technologies, including:

  • Pre-Collision Braking
  • Lane Keep Assist
  • Adaptive Cruise Control
  • Pre-Collision Throttle Management

You can hit the road with peace of mind in the Ford Fusion, as well. It has its own suite of safety and driver-assistive technologies known as Ford Co-Pilot360™. This suite is very similar to that of the Legacy, with many of the same features.

There is only one major difference that puts the safety of the 2019 Subaru Legacy above that of the Ford Fusion. Safety features come standard on the Legacy, but not on the Ford Fusion.

Safety Ratings

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration crash tests, both the Subaru Legacy and the Ford Fusion received a 5-Star Overall Safety Rating. The 2019 Subaru Legacy also received five stars in every category including Frontal Crash, Side Crash, and Rollover. The Ford Fusion, on the other hand, only received 4-star ratings in Overall Frontal Crash and Rollover tests.

Both vehicles also performed well with their respective Insurance Institute for Highway Safety crash tests; however, the Subaru Legacy was voted as a 2019 TOP SAFETY PICK+. Vehicles must pass every one of their crash tests and offer advanced to superior front crash prevention to receive this title.

While the Ford Fusion performed well with its crash tests, it received Poor ratings for its headlights and only Marginal ratings for its child seat anchors. With that said, it's clear that the Fusion doesn't stand up to the Subaru Legacy when it comes to the safety of you and your passengers.

Test Drive Your Dream Vehicle

The Ford Fusion is certainly a good midsize sedan. The 2019 Subaru Legacy, however, has the power and efficiency that you need for your next drive around Bloomfield, Montclair, and Clifton. It also has standard safety features you trust to protect you and your loved ones.

If you think the Subaru Legacy is the right car for you, come on over to Lynnes Subaru. Our dedicated team will help find the best Legacy for you. Schedule a test drive today!
