2016 Subaru Legacy vs. 2016 Ford Fusion

The affordable midsize class of vehicles is full of hard-hitting competitors. Two popular vehicles in the class are the 2016 Ford Fusion and the 2016 Subaru Legacy

How do the two compare? We took the time to do a vehicle comparison for you. Check it out now and then schedule a test drive at Lynnes Subaru.

Subaru Legacy vs. Ford Fusion Power Comparison

The 2016 Subaru Legacy offers two powerful engine options. The first is the 2.5-liter DOHC aluminum-alloy 16-valve horizontally opposed four-cylinder SUBARU BOXER engine with Dual Active Valve Control System. The SUBARU BOXER engine is unique because it's a flat laying engine which features horizontally opposed valves. This not only offers a lower center of gravity, but it eliminates drag while diverting power from the engine to the vehicle's drivetrain to improve handling. The 2.5-liter engine produces 175 horsepower and 174 lb-ft of torque, and gets an EPA-estimated 24 city and 36 highway mpg.

The second engine option is a 3.6-liter DOHC aluminum-alloy 24-valve horizontally opposed six-cylinder SUBARU BOXER engine with Dual Active Valve Control System. This engine produces 256 horsepower and 247 lb-ft of torque, and gets an EPA-estimated 20 city and 29 highway mpg. Both engines are paired with the Lineartronic continuously variable transmission with six-speed manual mode and paddle shifters.

The 2016 Ford Fusion offers numerous engine options, including a 2.5-liter engine that has the ability to reach 175 horsepower. The next level up is the 1.5-liter EcoBoost engine, which only increases the engine's horsepower to 181. The 2.5-liter gets an EPA estimated 22/34 mpg city/highway, which is slightly lower than the 2.5-liter SUBARU BOXER engine.

Although the Ford Fusion offers more engine options, the vehicle's power and maneuverability simply can't compare to what you'll get with the 2016 Subaru Legacy. Between the powerful engine and the smooth-transitioning transmission, the Legacy delivers a driving experience that clearly surpasses that of the Fusion.

Technology Comparison

The 2016 Subaru Legacy offers some of the most functional infotainment technology on the market today. The vehicle comes standard with a 6.2-inch high-resolution touchscreen HD radio audio system with SUBARU STARLINK in-vehicle technology. HD Radio allows the listener to tune into regular AM/FM stations, but at a more crisp sound quality. The HD Radio eliminates the annoying buzz that usually comes with talk radio broadcasts.

This system also offers up a CD player, a USB port, four speakers, hands-free phone connectivity and Bluetooth audio streaming, which allows you to play music from your phone's various music-related apps like Spotify® or Pandora® into your vehicle's sound system. A great bonus is that you can access the cruise control, Bluetooth® and audio with the steering wheel-mounted controls. You can scan the radio, set your cruise or make a phone call all without taking your hands off of the steering wheel.

You can also upgrade to a 7-inch infotainment system or a Harman Kardon speaker system, or even add navigation. The vehicle also offers STARLINK Safety and Security connected services as an optional feature, which includes SOS emergency assistance, automatic collision notification, roadside assistance and stolen vehicle recovery.

When it comes down to actual usability, the Ford Fusion infotainment system is a drag. While the SYNC system has slightly improved since its first inception, it's still difficult to use due to its lagging response time and difficult setup process. The actual hardware that Ford uses in the Fusion isn't as responsive or as well-designed as that in the Legacy, giving the Subaru vehicle a serious edge.

Safety Features

The 2016 Subaru Legacy offers some impressive safety features. To start, the Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive offers superior handling because this drivetrain gets its power from the SUBARU BOXER engine. This vehicle also features 4-wheel anti-lock brakes with brake assist and vehicle dynamics control. The traction control system will be a major benefit while driving on slippery or rough roads because it keeps your vehicle in track.

In terms of collision protection, the Subaru Legacy offers dual-stage front airbags, advanced frontal airbags, side curtain airbags and seat-mounted side airbags for pelvis/torso protection in the event of side impact. The advanced airbags sense the severity of the collision, and determine how much to inflate the airbags.

The 2016 Ford Fusion features 4-wheel anti-lock brakes with both stability and traction control. In terms of passive safety, the Ford Fusion features front airbags, dual front side-mounted airbags and side curtain airbags for front and rear passengers.

Safety Ratings

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration crash tests, both the Subaru Legacy and the Ford Fusion received overall 5-star ratings. The 2016 Subaru Legacy also received 5-stars in every category including frontal crash, side crash and rollover. The Ford Fusion, on the other hand, only received 4 stars in side crash and rollover.

Both vehicles also performed well with their respective Insurance Institute for Highway Safety crash tests; however, the Subaru Legacy was voted as a 2016 Top Safety Pick +. Vehicles must pass every one of their crash tests with flying colors and also offer advanced to superior front crash prevention to receive this title. While the 2016 Ford Fusion performed well with its crash tests, it offers acceptable small overlap front protection and only basic front crash prevention. In terms of safety, the 2016 Subaru Legacy offers more for you and your passengers.
