2016 Subaru Crosstrek vs. 2016 Kia Sportage

When looking for a midsize SUV, two names come to mind: the Subaru Crosstrek and the Kia Sportage. These two vehicles are similar, but it's the differences that you should really be looking at.

In this vehicle comparison, our team at Lynnes Subaru will show drivers like you in the Montclair, Clifton, and Bloomfield area the features of both these SUVs and which one would make for a better choice for your needs.

Power and Performance

The Subaru Crosstrek and the Kia Sportage have very different engines. The Subaru Crosstrek features the Subaru BOXER® engine, which has a dual active valve control system. This unique engine increases the power capability while keeping the engine fuel efficient, which will save you on gas in the long run.

The Kia Sportage has a four-cylinder engine, but given the low center of gravity with the Subaru Crosstrek's BOXER® engine, the Crosstrek can offer additional power and fuel efficiency. It gets an EPA-estimated 23 city/31 highway mpg compared to the Kia Sportage's 21 city/28 highway mpg.

Space and Seating

Comfort is important, and with the Subaru Crosstrek, comfort is what you'll get. The spacious interior comfortably seats five passengers on cloth upholstery. The front of the Crosstrek offers 39.8 inches of head room, so tall individuals don't have to worry about feeling cramped.

The Kia Sportage also seats five passengers. However, for drivers concerned with space, the headroom is lower than the Crosstrek's, only offering 39.1 inches. Midsize SUVs don't have to be the size of tanks, but you still want a little space to stretch out.

Technology and Entertainment

Both the 2016 Crosstrek and the Kia Sportage feature Bluetooth®, which is great for staying connected while driving. However, the other technology features with these two vehicles are vastly different. The Subaru Crosstrek features a STARLINK™ 6.2-inch touchscreen display, which makes picking the right music, volume, and temperature a breeze. The Kia Sportage offers a touch-screen display, too, only it's almost 2 inches smaller (4.3 inches) and requires the driver to upgrade to the EX model.

Standard Safety Features

Safety is an important factor when determining which vehicle you want to buy. The 2016 Subaru Crosstrek received an overall five-star rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and performed almost perfectly in all categories. The Kia Sportage received mixed reviews from the crash tests administered by the NHTSA but received an overall four-star rating.
