2016 Outback Engine and Drivetrain

The 2016 Subaru Outback comes standard with a 2.5-liter DOHC aluminum-alloy 16-valve horizontally opposed four-cylinder SUBARU BOXER engine with Dual Active Valve Control System that produces 175 horsepower and 174 lb-ft of torque.

The vehicle also offers a larger, more powerful engine: a 3.6-liter DOHC aluminum-alloy 24-valve horizontally opposed four-cylinder SUBARU BOXER engine with Dual Active Valve Control System that produces 256 horsepower and 247 lb-ft of torque.

Both engines are paired with the Lineartronic continuously variable transmission with six-speed manual mode and paddle shifters.

The 2016 Outback offers standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, the X-Mode Traction Assist System with Hill Descent Control, Traction Control, Incline Start Assist, and Vehicle Dynamics Control. All of these technologies work together to give the Outback its incredible handling and maneuverability.

2016 Subaru Outback Interior

The interior of the new Subaru Outback is both comfortable and spacious. The Outback is clearly built for long road trips for the whole family and provides plenty of elbow room for your passengers. The 2016 Outback comes standard with a six-way adjustable driver's seat, reclining rear seats, and a 60/40-split fold-down rear seatback.

2016 Subaru Outback Bloomfield NJThe Subaru Outback also offers several great upgrades, including a 10-way power-adjustable driver seat with power-adjustable lumbar support and two-position memory function. You can also get the four-way power-adjustable front passenger's seat, which is very comfortable. And the heated front seats with the All-Weather Package and optional heated rear seats can make those early mornings in Montclair, Clifton, and Bloomfield just a little bit warmer.

Technology of the 2016 Subaru Outback

The 2016 Subaru Outback has a lot to offer today's buyer, and it goes beyond what's under the hood. The vehicle offers a whole suite of great comfort, convenience, and entertainment features for you to choose from.

The vehicle comes standard with electronic cruise control, transmission paddle shifters, and the STARLINK 6.2-inch multimedia high-resolution touchscreen infotainment system with HD radio, SUBARU STARLINK in-vehicle technology, a USB port, Bluetooth audio streaming, a CD player, hands-free phone connectivity, and four speakers.

The Outback also offers several upgrades, including the STARLINK 7-inch multimedia plus infotainment system, which gives you two additional speakers and a larger touchscreen. You can also upgrade the audio system to have 12 Harmon Kardon speakers or add navigation or both.

2016 Subaru Outback Bloomfield NJIn addition to its entertainment features, the vehicle offers a delightfully comfortable interior with an optional 10-way power adjustable driver's seat and four-way power-adjustable front-passenger's seats, heated front seats, heated rear seats, and leather-trimmed upholstery. The vehicle comes standard with a manually adjustable CFC-free air conditioning system but also gives you the option to upgrade to the dual-zone climate control system.

Outback Safety Features

The 2016 Subaru Outback is loaded with state-of-the-art safety features. Advanced technology abounds on the list of standard and optional features for the Outback. These features include the following:

    • EyeSight Driver Assist: This technology monitors traffic movement around you, optimizes cruise control based on the vehicle in front of you, and even lets you know if you've left your lane, all in an effort to help you be a more aware driver.
    • Blind Spot Detection and Rear Cross Traffic Alert: This technology uses radar sensors to warn you if it senses a vehicle in your blind spot while you're on the road and when you're reversing out of a parking spot.
    • Vehicle Dynamics Control with Active Torque Vectoring: This technology gives you the best handling possible by sensing both braking and steering inputs and helping you to stay on your intended trajectory.

All of these features are designed to keep you, your passengers, and the other drivers on the road as safe as possible. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gave the 2016 Subaru Outback a five-star overall rating in frontal, side, and rollover crash tests. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety also gave the 2016 Outback its highest rating of good in side impact, roof, and rear crash protection.

In addition to these great optional features, the vehicle comes standard with several incredible features, including Brake Assist, four-wheel anti-lock brakes, Vehicle Dynamics Control, Traction Control, daytime running lights, and a tire pressure monitoring system.

When you're driving your Subaru Outback, rest assured that the advanced dashboard lights in the vehicle displays will let you know if your vehicle needs maintenance with warning lights or uses indicator lights to let you know when a system is working properly.

Subaru Outback vs. the Competition

2016 Subaru Outback Bloomfield NJThe 2016 Subaru Outback is an incredibly popular vehicle thanks to its unique style and design. The vehicle is built for going out on and adventure, and because of this, it has quite a bit of competition in the class.

2016 Subaru Outback vs. Chevrolet Equinox

The 2016 Subaru Outback is both affordable and well-equipped, and the Chevy Equinox appears to be the same. But when you really look at the numbers, there's quite a bit of difference. While the 2016 Outback offers many incredible standard features, including all-wheel drive, the Equinox requires many upgrades to get there. And though the Equinox offers a larger base engine, the vehicle can't compare to the Outback in terms of efficiency.

2016 Subaru Outback vs. Ford Edge

The Ford Edge offers a competitive base price, but again it doesn't offer standard all-wheel drive, which is important for all of the adventures you have planned. The vehicle's disappointing fuel economy at an EPA-estimated 18 city and 26 highway mpg can't compare to the incredible estimated 25 city and 33 highway mpg for the Outback. Make sure to check out the rest of our Subaru vehicle comparisons to see how each Subaru model stacks up against the competition.
